British Steel shapes SeAH Wind’s £900M Project

Construction is advancing on one of the world’s largest offshore wind farms being developed on Teesside with the help of British steel.

SeAH Wind, by SeAH Steel Holdings Corporation, based in the United Kingdom, constructing its £900 million monopile manufacturing facility on the south bank of the River Tees at Teesworks is currently 90% complete.

Following an agreement between SeAH, British Steel, and Severfield, 30,000 tonnes of steel has been supplied into the development, with the sections coming from our Teesside Beam Mill at nearby Lackenby.

The main building is expected to span 40m in height, 810m in length, and 200m in width. Aligned with the demand in the market for large-scale products, their in-house technological capabilities can deliver monopiles up to a maximum of 15.5m in outside diameter, 120m in length, and 3500 metric tons, says the company’s official statement.

The building will be the world’s biggest monopile facility and the only one of its kind in the UK, as per British Steel. The monopiles – are the structures that form the foundations of offshore wind turbines, their statement included.

British Steel Commercial Director for Construction, Ben Cunliffe, said, “This is a truly fantastic example of leveling up in the UK, with probably the largest regeneration area across the UK happening right on our doorstep in Teesside.”

Monopiles produced at the site will be transported straight from the factory to the newly constructed Steel River Quay, to be shipped to North Sea and other for Installation.

Chris Sunghwal Sohn, CEO of SeAH Winds, says, ” SeAH not only envisages being an important market leader in such a critical industry but plans on becoming a pioneer for the next generation of large-scale products which will support and drive the world’s energy transition to a Net Zero future.”

The key element of this project has always been to ensure that its development supports outstanding local businesses such as Teesside Beam Mill, according to British Steel.
