BRICS+ Fashion Summit Unveils BRICS International Fashion Federation

In a landmark development for the global fashion industry, representatives from over 50 nations convened in Moscow to announce the formation of the BRICS International Fashion Federation (BRICS IFF) at the conclusion of the BRICS+ Fashion Summit. This historic memorandum aims to unite fashion associations and industry leaders to enhance international collaboration, sustainability, and opportunities for the next generation of fashion talent.

The summit, which saw participation from delegates across more than 100 countries, has been hailed as the largest fashion event focused on both emerging and established markets. It underscored the shared commitment to navigating the complexities and challenges faced by the global fashion industry.

Susan Sabet, Founding Board Member and Secretary General of the Egypt Fashion & Design Council, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “The establishment of the BRICS International Fashion Federation is an important step and umbrella to encourage and facilitate dialogue, connections, potential collaborations, and partnerships for all joining countries. Such an umbrella also ensures a professional standard and legitimacy.”

Sunil Sethi, Chairman of the Fashion Design Council of India, echoed this sentiment, expressing the urgency for an alliance among emerging countries. “The need for such a fashionable alliance of emerging countries is long overdue. Brands, designers, and markets all face similar challenges—from supply chain disruptions to environmental issues—that are easier to solve together,” he remarked. He added that it is essential for emerging markets to have their own platform to amplify their voices in a fashion landscape dominated by a few major global brands.

The memorandum was signed by influential figures, including CEOs of leading fashion weeks, heads of fashion and textile associations, and academic leaders from countries such as India, South Africa, Russia, Egypt, and several others across Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

Natalya Sergunina, Deputy Mayor of Moscow, heralded the initiative as a major outcome of the summit, stating, “The creation of this International Federation demonstrates once again the shared goals and substantial potential for growth that we have with our global colleagues.”

The newly formed federation aims to achieve several key objectives: supporting local talent, promoting sustainable fashion practices, fostering cultural exchange, and creating a unified platform for emerging markets. The BRICS IFF will also prioritize educational and informational projects that advance the fashion industry while preserving cultural identities and supporting traditional arts and crafts.

In a collective statement, the federation’s leaders reaffirmed their commitment to offering young visionaries a global platform and local events to celebrate their creative endeavors. They stressed the urgent need to incorporate sustainable and eco-friendly practices within the industry and to create transparent methods to reduce the overall carbon footprint of fashion. The ethos of “slow fashion,” which emphasizes mindful consumption and production, is set to be a central focus of the BRICS IFF agenda.

As the fashion world looks to the future, the establishment of the BRICS International Fashion Federation signals a pivotal shift towards inclusivity, sustainability, and collaboration in the global fashion landscape, ensuring that the voices of emerging markets are heard and valued. [1
