Brazil’s steel import surge shows no signs of slowing [1] , with April figures potentially surpassing March’s historic levels. According to the National Institute of Steel Distributors (INDA), the country’s flat steel imports already set a record last month, and expectations point to continued growth.
Carlos Loureiro, president of INDA, warned that more than half a million tons of steel are currently awaiting nationalization in the São Francisco do Sul port alone. He emphasized the need for government intervention against China’s steel exports, cautioning that domestic steel plants may suffer severe consequences without regulatory action. Local distributors, he added, are already struggling to stay afloat amid the influx of foreign steel.
The Brazilian Steel Institute reported that total steel imports reached 663,000 tons in March, marking the highest single-month import volume in the nation’s history. As shipments continue to arrive in April, concerns mount over the impact on Brazil’s steel industry, which faces increasing pressure from foreign competition.
