BASF introduces a New Biopolymer Grade Midsole in running shoe

In a groundbreaking development, BASF has introduced a new biopolymer grade [1], ecoflex BMB, which is being used in the first-ever running shoe midsole. The innovative midsole, developed by ultrarunning brand Mount to Coast, combines high performance with sustainability.

The CircleCELL™ midsole, made from BASF’s ecoflex BMB, is 90% more durable than traditional midsoles while maintaining the same energy return as midsoles made from polyether block amide (PEBA), a material commonly used in performance running shoes. The ecoflex BMB biopolymer replaces fossil raw materials with renewable feedstock derived from organic waste and residual biomass. This biomass-balanced approach is certified according to REDcert 2 and ISCC PLUS standards.

“We are committed to creating shoes through sustainable materials and innovative processes without compromising the specific performance needs of ultrarunners,” said Yeti Zhang, Mount to Coast’s head of product.

He added “BASF has been a crucial partner in supporting our product development team as we search for ways to balance durability and sustainability. Their creativity in introducing mature technology from one industry into a new space, like the footwear industry, is inspiring and aligns with our goals to offer the running community new performance solutions. We are excited to continue working with a world-renowned company advancing biopolymers.”

Mount to Coast and BASF have entered into a strategic partnership to explore high-performance, sustainable solutions for runners. Marcel Philipp Barth, head of global business management Biopolymers at BASF, highlighted the company’s excitement about bringing its expertise in circularity and renewable resources to new application fields. He expressed confidence in the potential of biopolymers to inspire new applications and improve footwear materials.

The collaboration between Mount to Coast and BASF is expected to set a new standard for sustainable footwear, offering runners high-performance solutions that also benefit the environment.
