Bangladesh has solidified its global leadership in sustainable apparel manufacturing with 229 eco-friendly factories recognised worldwide. Mohiuddin Rubel, head of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), announced that three additional Ready-Made Garment (RMG) facilities—located in Sitakunda, Chattogram; Sepal Garments Limited in Gazipur; and Ananta Huajing Limited in Narayanganj—have been designated as “Green Factories.”
With this progress, Bangladesh’s textile and apparel sector now boasts 229 environmentally friendly factories. Of these, 91 have earned the prestigious “LEED Platinum” certification from the US Green Building Council (USGBC), while 124 hold “Gold,” 10 have achieved “Silver,” and 4 have “Certified” status.
To receive USGBC certification, a facility must score more than 80 points out of 110 for “LEED Platinum,” 60–79 for “LEED Gold,” 50–59 for “LEED Silver,” and 40–49 for “LEED Certified.”
Notably, nine of the world’s top ten eco-friendly factories, and 61 out of every 100, are located in Bangladesh, according to BGMEA.
This remarkable achievement underscores Bangladesh’s commitment to sustainability and its pivotal role in driving the global green fashion movement. As the country continues to invest in eco-friendly practices, its apparel industry sets a powerful example for balancing growth with environmental responsibility, reinforcing its position as a leader in sustainable manufacturing.
