Amazon and Iberdrola Strengthen Renewable Energy Collaboration, Secure First PPAs in Portugal and Spain

USA’s Amazon and Iberdrola have announced an expansion of their global renewable energy partnership [1], adding 476 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy power purchase agreements (PPAs) in Portugal and Spain. This marks Amazon’s first renewable energy projects in these countries, furthering their commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

The new PPAs include a 219 MW wind project from the Tâmega Wind Complex in Portugal and two solar and wind projects in Spain totaling 257 MW. These projects will collectively produce approximately 1,093 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of carbon-free electricity annually, enough to power around 300,000 homes.

Amazon’s partnership with Iberdrola, initially formed in 2022, allows for collaboration on renewable energy projects in new and existing markets. With these latest agreements, Amazon has now contracted over 66,000 GWh of renewable energy from Iberdrola worldwide.

Aitor Moso Raigoso, Executive Vice President Customer Business at Iberdrola, stated, “With Amazon, we have a partnership that truly matches our own commitment to develop sustainable energy and drive the energy transition forward around the world.”

The Tâmega Wind Complex, backed by a €350 million investment from Iberdrola, is set to begin construction in early 2025 and aims to power about 128,000 households annually while creating over 700 jobs at peak construction. In Spain, Amazon will purchase 212 MW from the Ciudad Rodrigo solar PV plant in Salamanca and 45 MW from the Valdemoro Wind Farm in Burgos. These projects will support local communities by creating jobs and contributing to the region’s sustainable development.

Lindsay McQuade, Director of Energy for EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) at Amazon, said, “We are excited to further support Iberdrola in its growth plans, leveraging the scalability and services of AWS in data and AI.”

The partnership also includes plans to develop a Virtual Desktop as a Service platform and migrate critical workloads to the AWS Region in Spain, enhancing Iberdrola’s operational efficiency and flexibility.

With over 600 renewable projects globally, Amazon has been named the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy. This expansion into Portugal and Spain underscores their ongoing commitment to sustainability and innovation in the renewable energy sector.
