Global EV sales projected at 28% of new-car market; U.S. share collapses to 5.6%

On May 20, 2026, the IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2026 projected that combined BEV and PHEV sales will reach 23 million in 2026, representing exactly 28% of total global car sales.

Rhodium Group and MIT data released the same day show U.S. EV consumer spending was down 23% year-on-year in Q1 2026 after federal tax credits expired on September 30, 2025; Cox Automotive registration data shows new U.S. EV market share fell to 5.6% in April. By contrast, the IEA expects sales in Asia-Pacific outside China to surge over 50% and Latin America 45%.
