Ukrainian Railways considers British Steel rails

Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) is considering sourcing rails from UK’s British Steel, an item surfaced as the UK government continues to weigh full nationalization of the Jingye-owned producer.

British Steel’s Scunthorpe rails capacity remains operational, supported by UK government measures including the UK Steel Industry (Special Measures) Act 2025, as the UK weighs options for the producer’s future.

Why it matters for green steel: Diversification by major national railway buyers increasingly factors in carbon content alongside price and supply security, with Scunthorpe’s prospective EAF conversion central to its long-term offer.
