SBTi Backs Shein’s Commitments

Online fashion retailer Shein has secured official validation of its net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions targets from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This endorsement confirms that Shein’s short- and long-term climate goals align with the SBTi’s rigorous net-zero standard, grounded in the latest climate science and the 2015 Paris Agreement objective of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

By 2030, Shein aims to reduce its absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions—those from direct operations and energy use—by 42%, and its Scope 3 emissions—indirect emissions across its value chain—by 25%. The company also plans to meet its annual electricity requirements entirely through renewable sources by the same year. Looking further ahead, Shein is targeting a 90% reduction across all three emission scopes by 2050.

“SBTi’s validation of our net-zero targets marks an important step in SHEIN’s decarbonisation journey. We are committed to reducing emissions across our value chain and recognise that addressing Scope 3 emissions is a complex but critical part of that effort. As we continue this work, we will build on our momentum and adapt our approach in line with evolving technologies, policies and industry best practices,” commented Mustan Lalani, Shein’s Global Head of Sustainability.

In 2024, Shein collaborated with sustainability consultancy Anthesis Group to develop a comprehensive decarbonisation roadmap. This strategy prioritises emission-reduction actions based on their impact potential, feasibility, and alignment with the company’s business objectives and growth plans.

To reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions, Shein is focusing on transitioning to renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, phasing out fossil fuels, and limiting fugitive emissions. On the Scope 3 front, the company is targeting its most significant emission contributors—purchased goods and services, and upstream logistics—which together accounted for 96% of its total emissions in 2024.

Efforts to cut production-related emissions include reducing the use of virgin materials in favour of low-carbon alternatives and promoting environmentally responsible manufacturing practices. For transport emissions, Shein intends to shorten supply routes and enhance logistics efficiency.
